Scholar? Me in that company? Thanks, but that definitely proves you don't come around much :-) I'm just in the "knows some useless information" category.

And I should point out that HIV wasn't identified until 1981 (and hit the news around then, I think), but that means that, by definition, it WAS around earlier and infecting folks (long incubation and all) -- so that 1979-ish behavior/assumptions most definitely contributed to ... blah blah argue argue argue ...

Identified in 1981, acknowledged by Ronald Reagan? Oh, maybe what, 1989?

...and you know more than most, and are a scholar in my book. We have a huge GD cover band scene here in St. Louis (2 "competing" bands that play here at least once each weekly), and it always amazed me the lack of basic GD knowledge of so many of their fans, as well as the musicians themselves. I couldn't have the kind of conversations I have here with 99% of those people. They might have some Dick's Picks, but my excited ranting and raving about the new Miller transfer of 10/13/68 or something would just go over their heads.

I used to sortof work for one of the bands (mostly in an "archivist" role, keeping track of setlists, taping shows, other random shit), and got to know many of the revolving door of musicians that came and went over the years. A lot of them really didn't know anything about the earlier GD. I used to give them cd's of stuff like 2/14/68, they'd never even heard that kind of stuff.

For a while Stu Allen was a somewhat permanent member of one of the bands ("The Schwag," whose bass player has been playing with Melvin Seals for a few years now, along with Pete Lavezolli), it was great when he came around because he knew more about the history of the music and got them to do stuff like the 73/74 style post-Eyes jam, stuff like that.
